Metrolink increases some ticket prices for 1st time in 13 years. Here’s what you need to know

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Riding the Metrolink just got more expensive for Southern California riders for the first time in more than a decade.

The increases, which took effect Monday, apply to one-way tickets and the SoCal Day Pass. The last time fares were raised was 13 years ago.

A weekday SoCal Day Pass is now $19 — up from $15, which is a nearly 27% increase. For a SoCal Day Pass on a weekend or holiday, it’s now going to cost you $12 instead of $10. A one-way ticket will cost you more — about 14% more on average — but it will vary by distance.

“Metrolink is facing higher operating and maintenance costs, slower than anticipated post-pandemic ridership growth and declining state and federal funding support,” said Meredith Yeoman, Director of Communications.

While some riders were planning for the fare increase, others were not.

Even with high gas prices, the increased fare has some Metrolink riders feeling like it’s not as good of a value.

“The inflation really wears on all of our faces. Whether you are rich or poor,” said Metrolink commuter Louis Atlantis.

But even with the jump, most riders say Metrolink is still their best option – between gas and convenience.

“It saves your time a lot. A lot. Because the traffic and everything – everything doubles up when you go in car,’ said commuter Krima Patel.

Metrolink is reminding riders that everyday discounts are available for those who need them.

“Any fare increase can create an added barrier for our riders – especially when costs are rising in every facet of life right now,” Yewoman said.

One ticket price that is not going up is the L.A. Zone Pass. That will remain at $5 – regardless of the distance traveled.
