Located in the Los Altos District, The Crooked Duck has become a community gathering place known for its breakfast and lunch favorites.
That includes its famous corned beef hash, which has brought plenty of regulars through the doors.
“Best corned beef hash. And that’s what brought me in originally,” said Scott, a regular customer.
The menu also features burgers, duck omelets, pulled pork and the marvelous Monte Cristo sandwich.
But there’s more to The Crooked Duck than what’s on the menu.
Owner Joey Rooney said you’ll have to visit the restaurant to learn the legend behind its name.
“My uncle told me this crazy story about this duck that got hit by a water skier. That’s all I’m gonna say, because you’re gonna have to come in the restaurant. And you have to read the story.”
The restaurant itself has quite a history.
The building was once a house, then a beauty salon, before becoming the restaurant it is today.
Rooney said he quickly realized The Crooked Duck was going to become something special.

“I think the first week I realized, ‘Oh my goodness, this is insane here.’ I mean the crowd started coming.”
Fifteen years later, that support continues.
“I think it’s wonderful that people actually recognize us and give us the recognition that’s deserved,” Rooney said.
In a city with no shortage of great restaurants, Rooney turned his love for the water, good eats and great coffee into a special gathering place.
He said the restaurant’s loyal customers are only part of what has kept The Crooked Duck going all these years.
“I have a team, I’m getting goosebumps. I have a team that is amazing. I mean, really do.”
Rooney said he’s grateful for the people who have stayed with him throughout the journey.
“I am so blessed that I have a team that stuck with me all these years.”
The Crooked Duck is located at 5096 CA-1 in Long Beach, and is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day.
Monday through Thursday, customers can also enjoy $5 mimosas.
