It’s a little cheaper in Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Last year in the L.A. area, diesel was going for $5.15 a gallon. Fast forward to last month it climbed up to more than $7 and now a gallon of diesel costs almost $8.40.

Governor Gavin Newsom is asking that the cheaper winter blend gasoline be put on line now, suspending the higher priced summer blend. As California gas prices continue to go up , the hope is that the winter blend will save motorists a few cents at the pump.

California has this special fuel blend that helps with lower emissions and because of that special blend, motorists pay around $2 more per gallon than the national average. So you may notice the lower costs coming in a few days.

Gas is still over $6 a gallon and if you use premium, prices are hovering around the $7 mark. Overall, gas prices are up 15 cents from a week ago, 66 cents from a month ago and close to $1.70 from last year.

Due to factors, like the war in Iran and issues with getting oil out of the Strait of Hormuz, experts say don’t expect the price of gas to normalize anytime soon.

“A few pennies in the time may be well, it could save motorists 15 to 25 cents a gallon. And it could start to show up in the next week, although with ongoing geopolitical tensions, that could impact how much motorists can visibly see at the pump.” said Patrick De Haan with GasBuddy. “For now though, I am hopeful that it may take maybe 5 to 10 days for that winter gasoline to start flowing, but when it does it should bring with it some moderate relief in gas prices — subject to any ongoing geopolitical developments.”

So how can you try to save? Gas and supermart apps are a good start — they can save you between 5 to 20 cents per gallon at the pump. The GasBuddy app can also help you find the cheapest gas near you.
