Hollywood Burbank Airport to open newly-renovated terminal. Here’s what you need to know

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) — Travelers are getting a major upgrade with a brand new terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport, marking the culmination of a decades-long effort to replace an aging facility that’s been a favored transportation hub for Southern Californians.

The 355,000-square-foot facility replaces the existing 232,000-square-foot complex, whose original buildings opened in 1930.

The newly renovated terminal will officially open to travelers on Tuesday. The first flight out of the new space takes off at 7 a.m.

The new terminal – upgraded after 96 years – features new restaurants, retail stores, elevated ceilings and wireless charging stations at every gate’s seating, as well as animated displays.

It also boasts three new baggage carousels and a fully electric terminal – one of the first of its kind in the country.

It’s a major makeover for an airport that’s been a favorite for Southern California travelers for decades. But some said they’ll miss the old school charm of the previous 1930s-era terminal that made it feel special.

“It’s the most convenient airport there is,” said Steve Wurzel of Calabasas. “It’s like a neighborhood airport.”

Travelers will also encounter changes to airport access, with the main entrance moving to Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way from its longtime location off Thornton Avenue.

Valet service will move to the new terminal, and Lot E will close permanently. Rideshare passengers will use a new pickup lot near the terminal, while rental-car customers will take shuttles to the existing consolidated rental-car facility across Hollywood Way, officials said.

The Burbank Airport-North Metrolink station will be connected to the new terminal by a pedestrian path and on-demand shuttle.

Passengers will continue to board and deplane aircraft outdoors rather than through covered jet bridges, maintaining one of the airport’s longtime operating practices.
