Dozens joined a candlelit vigil Tuesday evening in memory of 4-month-old Luna Babers.

“Right now, I got a hole in my heart. I can’t believe this even happened,” said Herman Johnson.

The infant’s grandmother, Laura Lacy, was too distraught to say much during the vigil.

“I just my miss my baby… I miss my grandbaby.”

Lacy and her partner, Johnson, had been caring for their grandchild. On Monday evening, they dropped the baby off at the apartment where Luna’s mother, Lacy’s foster daughter, had been staying.

Early the next morning, the grandparents rushed to the neighborhood when they learned the baby was missing. They soon received the news that the baby was dead.

“When I dropped that baby off yesterday… something told me that I shouldn’t have did it,” Johnson said.

The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Takiyah Baber, was initially detained for questioning but was later placed under arrest on suspicion of murder.

A baby believed to be around 6 months old died after being found in a dumpster in South Los Angeles.

“I think it was premeditated. She did this on purpose. No way you’re gonna call somebody to pick up your baby… and then you do this,” Lacy said.

Baber’s big sister broke down in tears during Tuesday’s vigil.

“She wasn’t raised like that. She had everything she wanted… We let her be free, she didn’t have to do this,” said Bianca Jones.

A large crowd of adults and children gathered at the vigil, shaken by the death of baby Luna.

“When I heard that it was a 4-month-old baby… It’s very sad… All the mothers feel the pain,” said one woman.
