LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Long Beach homeowners along the peninsula are continuing to assess damage and reinforce their properties as strong surf, attributed to the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel, pounds the coastline and threatens beachfront homes.

Aerial footage from AIR7 Tuesday showed the extent of the destruction to homes along the Long Beach coastline.

High tide struck at 10:41 a.m., sending waves into the seawall and what used to be the boardwalk. Officials said a large section of the boardwalk and seawall has been destroyed, and several homes have been red-tagged.

So far, eight buildings accounting for 13 residences have been red-tagged, and one has been yellow-tagged. One home is on the brink of falling into the ocean.

The city has made repairs in the area, but the powerful surf continues to take a toll on the peninsula. City crews are filling sandbags and continue repairing what they can of the seawall and boardwalk in an effort to limit further damage to homes.

“I don’t think anything that’s being is good enough to protect the houses. We’re worried about flooding on our side, the bay side is sort of flooding a little and that’s where we are. So it just seems like the water is trying to connect over the peninsula. It’s a big concerning. So we’re just keeping an eye on everything and if we need to get out of here we will,” said Jazmin Evers of Long Beach.

Meanwhile less affected neighbors are working on strengthening their home protections, as an upcoming “Super El Niño” this winter promises to cause even more problems.

“My home post Hurricane Marie, no damage. So my goal is to just mitigate the damage in terms of protecting the seawall, trying to keep the seawall alive, because, you know, we have lost the seawall about 4 houses down,” said VR Venkatraman of Long Beach. “All of those have become unlivable.”

“It’s definitely hectic. It’s nerve-racking. Feel, you know, obviously bad for the people who are losing their homes but you just gotta keep positive,” said Long Beach resident Laureen Leslie.

For now, residents are hoping the peninsula can withstand the current surf conditions while they wait to see what additional weather impacts may lie ahead.
