SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) — A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by police following a family dispute inside an apartment complex in Santa Ana overnight.

The deadly incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. Sunday on the 3400 block of Main Street. The Santa Ana Police Department says a 53-year-old man called 911, reporting that his girlfriend’s 16-year-old son had stabbed him with a knife and was damaging property while under the influence.

“When our officers arrived, they saw that the suspect was still armed with that knife and unfortunately the suspect did not put that knife down, and that’s when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” said Officer Natalie Garcia.

Additional details about what prompted officers to open fire were not available.

The teen, who has not been identified, died at the scene.

The man who called police was taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the teen suspect’s mom was treated at the scene. Both of them are expected to be OK.

No officers were injured.

Roads in the area are expected to remain closed for the duration of the investigation.
