The boy was taken into custody last week after he was spotted riding the e-motorcycle near MacArthur Boulevard and Bison Avenue in Newport Beach, police said.

Investigators said he fled from officers into opposing traffic, running a red light at an intersection.

“Due to the extremely reckless riding behavior, officers did not pursue the subject,” the Newport Beach Police Department said in a post on Instagram. “While reviewing the incident, officers recognized the subject as a juvenile male they had prior contacts with involving illegal e-motorcycles.”

Officers served a search warrant at the boy’s home last Tuesday. He was later booked into juvenile jail and released to his parents.

Police said based on the documented history with the boy and his parents, the mother will be referred to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for additional charges.

The DA’s office told Eyewitness News on Thursday that the case remains under review and no decisions have been made.

“This incident serves as a reminder that e-motorcycles are dangerous and illegal,” said police. “NBPD will conduct follow-up, search warrants, make arrests and seek charges against those involved and the parents of those involved in these types of incidents.”
