Sweet Alice, 92, continues to give back to Watts community with annual 4th of July Giveaway

WATTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Long lines formed outside “Sweet” Alice Harris’ home in Watts on Thursday as residents gathered for the annual Sweet Alice Fourth of July Giveaway, an event aimed at helping community members facing growing food and financial needs.

Harris is a pillar in Watts and is known for giving back.

The giveaway, organized by Parents of Watts Social Services Center, provided food and other essentials to residents throughout the morning and continued until supplies were exhausted.

“I’ve been doing this now 71 years, and I’m 92,” Sweet Alice said.

Sweet Alice said her commitment to serving the community remains strong, even at the age of 92.

“God, that’s what keeps me going so strong. I’m doing the right thing. I love everybody, and I take care of them,” Sweet Alice said when asked what keeps her going.

The event included the distribution of clothes, shoes, undergarments, food and gift cards. It lasted all day until everything was gone.

Residents who attended said the assistance was welcome.

“I heard that she helps a lot of people, so we’re grateful for her. This is my first time here, but I’m grateful,” said Norma Franco.

Doris Sommerville said rising costs have made the giveaway especially helpful.

“It’s just gotten harder. Harder than ever before,” Sommerville said. “This comes in handy.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass attended the giveaway, continuing her tradition of supporting the event.

“The mayor always comes by, and she always helps us,” Sweet Alice said.

“We all join together to support Sweet Alice and what she’s doing,” Bass said.

Sweet Alice vows, even well into her golden years, she isn’t stopping serving God’s purpose in the community anytime soon.

“Those that wait upon the lord know that he will be here,” she said.
