The solo-car crash happened around 2 a.m. Friday along Burbank Boulevard near Balboa, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Video from the scene shows the white car was nearly split in two by the tree.

The victims were identified by police as a man and a woman who appear to be in their 20s or 30s. They were the only occupants of the car.

Witnesses heard the crash but there wasn’t much they could do. Many who live in the area say that stretch of road is notorious for speeding and deadly crashes, though the speed limit in that area is 35 miles per hour.

“When I’m asleep, I’ll hear it when I’m in my kitchen or my bathroom. It sounds like an airplane is crashing in our backyard,” said resident Frankie Andrew. “And then we walk out here and we’ll see people dead in their cars, upside down, bleeding out, you name it.”

That neighbor estimates he’s seen at least 16 crashes in the exact same spot with many of them ending as fatalities or near fatalities.
