After going through the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride mazes a couple years ago, it was time to see the event before the monsters showed up this weekend.

“Why am I already scared?” ABC7’s Tony Cabrera said. “It’s not even set up.”
“I’m always afraid of this too in the daytime, when I know nothing’s here,” general manager Jen Bendik said.
We walked closely together as crews built everything out in time for its 18th season.
In under a month, this team transforms the Crystal Springs Picnic Area at Griffith Park into the town of Midnight Falls.
Then, it’s the decorating and training the scare actors to get ready for opening night.
“This would be a scare pocket,” Bendik said. “When the guests come there, I’m ready to be right here.”
“Oh, they’re called scare pockets? Ah, there’s even terminology,” Cabrera said.
“That’s an industry term… I don’t know if you’re allowed to use it,” Bendik adds, with a laugh.

New this year is the addition of beer gardens, plus the “Fallen Angel Maze,” along with many of the Haunted Hayride’s classics.
“One of the infamous mazes, Hellbilly Halloween – quite terrifying, the Jasper family of cannibals, and you are their meal,” Bendik said. “That one, chainsaws… enter at your own risk…”
“This barn is probably one of the scariest parts of the Haunted Hayride experience,” Cabrera said.
The Haunted Hayride is open for 32 nights, starting Friday. The first week is open only Friday and Saturday nights. More nights are added each week.
