LYNWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — <\/span>You don\u2019t have to travel far to taste your way through Mexico.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Balam Mexican Kitchen<\/strong> in Lynwood, a charming little spot with indoor and outdoor spaces, and festive decorations throughout.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had this concept of opening up a restaurant with different styles of cooking from different parts of Mexico,\u201d owner Rosendo (AKA Chendo) Jacquez said.<\/p>\n

Balam is known for its gourmet tacos, each costing around $5.<\/p>\n

Jacquez said the magic starts with the made-to-order, blue corn tortilla.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cEvery single taco, if you come out and order 100 tacos, we got to make 100 tortillas on the spot,\u201d Jacquez said.<\/p>\n

His family comes from a small town in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where the barbacoa method of slow cooking meat is extremely popular.<\/p>\n

Here, the barbacoa is the best seller.<\/p>\n

But my favorite part of the trip was visiting the Mexican state of Yucatan with the Cochinita pibil taco.<\/p>\n

Slow roasted pork, black beans, and pickled red onions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThis one is my absolute favorite,\u201d ABC7\u2019s Rachel Brown said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very citrusy,\u201d Jacquez said. \u201cWhen we cook it, we do put orange peels in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside on the patio, Helping Hands Coffee, once a popular pop-up, is now a permanent fixture here.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cCommunity is key,\u201d Jacquez said. \u201cThe community has been good to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

COVID and recent ICE raids only strengthened the restaurant\u2019s relationship with customers, Jacquez added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it\u2019s just brought us closer,\u201d Jacquez said.<\/p>\n

In solidarity with the community, Balam Mexican Kitchen hands out free produce every Thursday at 3 p.m. to people fearful to leave their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe give them a safe space to come and just come quick, and grab a bag and leave, go home,\u201d Jacquez said.<\/p>\n

Balam Mexican Kitchen will celebrate 11 years in business this fall.<\/p>\n

They are open Tuesday through Sunday, and closed on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The restaurant is at 11700 Long Beach Blvd., in Lynwood.<\/p>\n
