ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — <\/span>Disney is bringing the spirit and traditions of our HBCUs to Southern California as only the mouse can do.<\/p>\n

Now through July 19, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are inviting visitors to \u201cCelebrate Soulfully,\u201d with a variety of activities throughout both parks.<\/p>\n

During the event, visitors can find special foods, entertainment elevating Black culture, and character meet-and-greets, like Powerline Max from \u201cThe Goofy Movie,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost times, when you think of Disney, you\u2019re thinking rides, you\u2019re thinking Mickey, you\u2019re thinking magic,\u201d said visitor Reginald McDonald.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never think family turn-up, Black cookout. You never think about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDonald, who came from Compton for the Disney on the Yard Juneteenth event, said he\u2019s been blown away by this year\u2019s celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201ci think it\u2019s impactful because it allows people to realize they\u2019re important,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, like for us, especially as Black people, we\u2019re not really in the spotlight too much, so to see this, it\u2019s like \u2019Oh no, we matter.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

On Juneteenth in Downtown Disney, there was music and dancing.<\/p>\n

The free Yardfest event centered around drum major Mickey Mouse and the Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul marching band.<\/p>\n

Mickey was trained by six different HBCU drum majors to ensure authenticity, high knees, and of course, that infamous back bend.<\/p>\n

Disney senior vice president Tinisha Agramonte said the event highlighted the importance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the day the last enslaved people in Texas found out they had been emancipated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wasn\u2019t ready,\u201d said Reelaviolette Botts-Ward, of Palo Alto. \u201cWe wasn\u2019t ready for drum major Mickey, but slay, slay, slay, slay. It was so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very proud that we have brought Disney on the Yard, and at the center of that is drum major Mickey Mouse,\u201d senior vice president Avis Lewis added. \u201cHe\u2019s very appropriate for this because when you think of HBCUs, it\u2019s really about the bands.\u201d<\/p>\n
