PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) — <\/span>More officers with the Pasadena Police Department have been placed on administrative leave following a “horseplay incident” in which an officer was shot by another officer, Chief Gene Harris said.<\/p>\n

In a statement obtained by Eyewitness News on Monday, Harris said new evidence has emerged in connection with the shooting. The incident occurred in September, but it drew national attention last week after the department released new video.<\/p>\n

Newly released dashcam video shows a Pasadena police officer getting shot by a fellow officer in what the police chief described as a “horseplay” incident.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“Following the release of the [officer-involved shooting] video last week, a witness came forward with additional information, and a new investigation has been opened based on documentation received Sunday, June 14,” Harris said. “The officers alleged to be involved have been placed on Administrative Leave – not simply because it’s policy, but because it reflects how seriously we take matters like this. When questions arise about conduct, we act.”<\/p>\n

The video shows one officer pulling his weapon and pointing it at another officer seated in a patrol car before re-holstering it. Investigators said the officer in the patrol car also drew his weapon, which suddenly went off, sending a bullet through the windshield and striking the other officer in the shoulder.<\/p>\n

Harris identified the officer who shot his colleague as Roy Alatorre and said he has been fired from the department. The officer who was wounded has recovered and remains employed with the department.<\/p>\n

Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo described his disappointment after the video’s release, telling Eyewitness News it was “juvenile, unacceptable behavior at the highest level on the part of these officers.”<\/p>\n

Gordo also expressed relief that the officers’ behavior did not result in more serious consequences.<\/p>\n

“To the people of Pasadena, I say I’m sorry that this occurred. I’m sorry that these officers behaved this way but understand that it’s not acceptable and the chief has assured me that it’s not going to happen again,” the mayor said.<\/p>\n

Gordo said that the criminal investigation has been turned over to the district attorney’s office for review. Meantime, the chief said the department will release the results of the new investigation once it is complete.<\/p>\n
