John McKinney, Marissa Roy vying to be LA’s next City Attorney. Here’s what you need to know

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Back in June, Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto became the first incumbent to lose in a primary in almost a century. She’ll be replaced by either L.A. County Prosecutor John McKinney or Deputy Attorney General with California DOJ Marissa Roy.

“I’m running for City Attorney because the city needs a fighter. And I want to bring my years of professional experience as a Deputy District Attorney to City Hall to fight for the people across the city,” said McKinney.

“I’m running to be the attorney for the people and what that really means is an attorney who is protecting Los Angeles, protecting Los Angeles from the Trump administration, from the company stealing wages, from the abusive landlords evicting people into homelessness,” said Roy.

Both candidates want to lower the millions of dollars the city of Los Angeles has had to pay in liability payouts.

“We’re going to be very proactive and put a risk management system in place to deal with the dangerous conditions and employment problems that are generating these lawsuits,” said McKinney.

“In order to mitigate liability so we can spend our taxpayer dollars on services, not lawsuits, and in the interest of public safety, we need to get LAPD and every single department in compliance,” said Roy.

Roy is a member of the la chapter of the DSA, the democratic socialists of America. McKinney has been critical of Roy’s approach to public safety saying her platform is one of political ideology.

“She’s not that into prosecuting crime. You know, that’s not really her thing. She once supported a plan to place a moratorium on the prosecution of certain misdemeanor crimes and she’s against using one of the more effective tools that the city has to deal with these dangerous encampments, especially when they’re in sensitive areas,” said McKinney.

But, Roy highlights her broad coalition of support which includes many endorsements besides the DSA.

“I am so proud to be supported and endorsed by the LA County Democratic Party, by senators Adam Schiff, Alex Padilla, and Bernie Sanders to be supportive by the L.A. Federation of Labor and dozens of unions, as well as tenants rights groups and the DSA. I think they all come together because they agree that this position needs someone who has a track record suing the trump administration, going after corporations that have been abusive,” said Roy.

Both candidates have pledged to bring back the neighborhood prosecutor program that puts a Deputy City Attorney in every neighborhood across the city and prosecute landlords who are taking advantage of vulnerable tenants.
