Yolanda Hernandez was on her evening walk at the intersection of Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street Friday when she was struck.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, she was in a marked crosswalk when the driver of a white pickup truck was attempting to make a turn and plowed into her.

“I have no words, honestly. I try not to think about it because it brings a lot of hatred in my heart… on how someone could do that and just leave anybody, just there to die,” said Paola Padilla, the victim’s granddaughter.

“I hope they catch (them) and (give them) what (they) deserve.”

Hernandez was taken to the hospital where she later died. Her family says they found out the next day.

“Everybody is just really destroyed.. She was the glue of the family.”

Her family says it was a devastating end for a woman who’d been fighting for her life for years, describing her as a resilient, caring and selfless woman.

Padilla says her grandmother survived a brain tumor and, at the time of her death, was battling stage four lung cancer.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police added that speed, distracted or impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the crash.
