BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A driver was arrested after their car flew off the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights and got wedged under an overpass early Thursday morning, killing his passenger.

A white Kia sedan drove off the freeway and landed in an embankment around 2:15 a.m. Thursday on the transition road from the northbound 5 Freeway to the eastbound 10 Freeway.
Video from the scene shows the badly mangled car and firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department working to clear the vehicle from the embankment.
Before firefighters arrived, bystanders ran to the vehicle to try to help the occupants and called 911. According to witnesses, the driver’s nephew was killed in the accident.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the involved vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to veering of the road and crashing into the embankment overcrossing,” CHP said in a press release.

Police say the driver was arrested for driving under the influence. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The California Highway Patrol closed the transition road and issued a SigAlert. Caltrans crews began breaking down the closure about 6:45 a.m., according to the CHP
