LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An American Airlines flight unexpectedly turned around and made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff overnight.

AA Flight 1009, which was bound for Chicago, departed from LAX around midnight Friday but returned around 12:45 a.m., less than an hour into the flight. A flight path map from FlightRadar24.com shows that the plane turned around over the Coachella Valley.
The airline said that an indicator light went off stating that the plane would not be able to detect hazardous weather ahead, prompting pilots to turn the aircraft around.

The flight eventually landed safely at LAX. The passengers on board were re-booked on an 8 a.m. flight.
